But the weather service cautioned that the storm bringing the snow will merge in this area with a warmer air mass coming in from the south and that would cause the snow to turn to the more treacherous sleet and freezing rain later in the evening. The area could get as much as a tenth of an inch of ice, Hale said.
A pair of storms spread snow, sleet and freezing rain across the eastern half of the nation, glazing highways with treacherous ice as far south as Georgia and closing schools and government offices Monday.
This weekend's rain in Washington, on top of a dusting of snow the night before, created some treacherous fog, making navigation tricky. Yet the inside the Beltway, lack of visibility was no match for another surprising political climate event — the fog created by the results in this week's surprising Iowa caucuses.
"Obviously the weather has made traveling treacherous and we don’t want our fans taking any unnecessary risks,” said Wizards President Susan O’Malley. “Tonight’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers will be played as scheduled. While we encourage fans to take Metro if it’s available to them for tonight’s game, we are also offering two games to which fans can exchange their tickets if they are unable to attend MCI Center tonight."
